The other half of Smith McBroom — and the cleanest natural experiment on this site. His partner <a href="/washington/seattle/gregory-mcbroom">Gregory McBroom</a> selected forty-three practice areas on the same optional WSBA field. Smith, at the same firm on the same day's record, selected twelve.

The bar record

We read Matthew J. Smith in the Washington State Bar Association’s legal directory. Rows shaded below the line are the ones WSBA labels as coming from the lawyer, not from the Bar.

Washington never says “none”, so neither do we. The Disciplinary History section carries no entries and no statement — only a warning that in some cases discipline search results will not reveal all disciplinary action relating to a Washington licensed legal professional, and may not display links to the official decision documents. So what we can report is narrow: no disciplinary entries are displayed, and WSBA warns its search may not display everything. That is not the sentence “this lawyer has no discipline”, and we will not write the second when the register only supports the first. One listing in this city does display an entry — which is how we know the dash means what we say it means.

And the shaded rows might be wrong. Above that block WSBA states that the information is provided voluntarily by the licensed legal professional and might be incomplete, inaccurate, and/or out of date. Texas calls its equivalent “self-reported”. Washington says it might be wrong. Note also the Judicial Service line: asked whether this lawyer has ever served as a judge, the register answers Unknown. A register that will print its own ignorance is rarer than it should be.

What the record shows

Same firm, same address, same suite as Gregory McBroom, whom we published in the first Seattle batch. McBroom’s record selects forty-three practice areas; Smith’s selects twelve. We counted both.Verified

Neither number tells you anything about either lawyer. It tells you what the field is: optional, self-reported, and unchecked — which is exactly what WSBA warns above it. Two partners at one small firm answering the same question four-fold differently is the clearest demonstration of that we have found.Verified

Smith’s twelve still include Administrative/Regulatory, Appellate, Business/Commercial, Civil Rights, Elder and Guardianships alongside Personal Injury.Verified

The rideshare page behind this listing is the same page that sits behind McBroom’s. It names no individual lawyer.Verified

What the firm says

The firm says it has advocated for injured clients since 2002 and is the premier law firm in the Northwest for jury trials.Reported

The firm says it does not believe in settling for less than the full value of a client’s injuries, and that no person should have to settle for discounted justice.Reported

The firm publishes verdict and settlement bands; we print no settlement or verdict figures.Reported

Rideshare

Rideshare content — checked 17 Aug 2026
Uber & Lyft
smithmcbroom.com — the same Seattle Uber and Lyft page that sits behind Gregory McBroom’s listing; returns 200 from our network
This is the firm’s own marketing. It shows they hold themselves out as taking rideshare cases — it is not evidence that they have run one, and we have not verified any rideshare case they have handled.

What we haven’t checked

Not established. The WSBA Discipline Notice Directory, a separate search we have not run. Which of his twelve practice areas he actually works in. Whether he or his partner handles rideshare matters — the page names neither. We have not reviewed court records for case outcomes, we print no settlement or verdict figures, and we have no basis for judging quality of representation. A bar check is a floor, not a ranking.
